Below is a list of factors considered during the orchestra audition that are used for placement into one of the Indian Hill Music Youth Orchestras (IHMYO). Please note that applicants are not placed based upon their age or school grade, but rather, on their audition results.
All IHMYO auditions are scheduled after you have signed up for an audition. Two students are scheduled in each 15 minute segment. The audition is comprised of 2 scales in standard major keys in 1, 2 or 3 octaves (whatever the student has covered in lessons), and two contrasting pieces of solo repertoire of the student's choice. The judges may also require sight reading if there is any question about the student's reading skills, or to help in the discernment of the student's placement. Repertory does not have to be memorized. A music stand is provided and proctors are available to direct students to warm-up and audition rooms.
HOW you play and WHAT you play are both taken into account in evaluating placement. We will notify you of your audition results within 1 week of your audition. Additional materials will be provided to those who join IHMYO (student handbook, music, schedules, etc.).
Be sure to work with your private teacher in selecting your audition pieces so that your mastery of the pieces represents your overall skill level. Scales are also an important part of the audition.
The IHMYO Audition Guidelines (see instrument tabs below) consist of a leveled list of repertoire (presented with scales) that you and your private teacher can use to select level-appropriate audition pieces. How well an audition piece is played is weighed against its difficulty: accuracy of notes and rhythm; clear and pleasing tone; intonation; level appropriate vibrato; appropriate bowing technique; appropriate shifting; articulation; and musicianship.
